How to Store Your Medicare Card, TFN and Visa Documents Safely

For people living in Australia — digital Medicare cards, why your Tax File Number needs extra care, keeping your visa grant notice to hand, and sharing documents securely.

Living in Australia means keeping track of your Medicare card, your Tax File Number (TFN), your driver licence and, if you're not a citizen, your visa grant notice. Here's how to keep each one safe and easy to find when you need it.

Your Medicare card: use the digital one

A digital copy of your Medicare card is available in the Express Plus Medicare app and can be added to the myGov app wallet. Most doctors and pharmacies accept it. Keep the physical card at home for the rare times it's asked for, and keep your myGov login protected — it links to your tax, Centrelink and Medicare records.

Your TFN: share it only when you have to

Your TFN is one of the most valuable numbers for identity thieves in Australia. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) advises giving it only to the ATO, your employer, your bank or super fund and your registered tax agent — and not putting it on a resume or job application. You don't need to keep a TFN card or letter on you; just make sure you can find it when you start a new job.

Your visa grant notice

Australian visas are digital — there's no label in your passport. Your visa grant notice is your record of the conditions, and employers, universities and landlords can check your entitlements through VEVO. Keep a copy of every grant notice; you'll need them for future applications.

Storing them in IDBANKQR.COM

  1. Log in and open Add New ID.
  2. Set Country to Australia (usually filled in from your location).
  3. Pick from the Australia document list — Medicare Card, Tax File Number (TFN) Letter, Driver Licence, Visa Grant Notice, Superannuation Statement, Private Health Insurance Card and more.
  4. Add the Expiry Date for your licence, visa or Medicare card to get reminders.

Files are encrypted at rest, and the Activity Log shows every view, print, download and share. If you also keep documents from your home country, save them with that country selected, and My Documents can list them separately.

Share copies the safe way

  • Share with a QR code that expires instead of emailing scans.
  • Choose View only when someone just needs to see a document.
  • For a rental application, share only what's asked for — your TFN is never needed.

Think your identity has been misused? IDCARE, Australia's national identity and cyber support service, can help you work out what to do next, and you can report scams to Scamwatch.

Quick checklist

  • Use the digital Medicare card and protect your myGov login.
  • Give your TFN only to the ATO, employer, bank, super fund or tax agent.
  • Keep every visa grant notice.
  • Share copies with expiring, view-only access.
