How to Store Your Canadian PR Card and SIN Safely

Keeping your Permanent Resident card, SIN confirmation letter and permits safe in Canada — expiry dates to watch, why your SIN is so sensitive, and how to share copies securely.

If you live in Canada as a permanent resident, worker or student, a handful of documents matter more than all the rest: your PR card or permit, your Social Insurance Number (SIN), your passport and your provincial health card. Here's how to keep them safe and current.

Why your SIN deserves extra care

Your SIN is used for work, taxes and government benefits, and it's a prime target for identity theft. Canada stopped issuing plastic SIN cards in 2014; you now get a confirmation letter instead. Keep that letter safe, don't carry it, and only give your SIN when the law requires it — for example to your employer or bank for tax reporting. A landlord or store asking for it can usually be offered another ID instead.

Watch your PR card and permit expiry dates

A PR card is usually valid for five years. Your permanent resident status doesn't end when the card expires, but you'll need a valid card (or a PR travel document) to come back to Canada by plane or other commercial transport. Work and study permits have their own expiry dates, and applying late can affect your status — check the current rules with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

Step 1: Keep secure digital copies

Keep copies of your PR card (both sides) or permit, your SIN confirmation letter, passport photo page, confirmation of PR (COPR), provincial health card, and tax slips such as T4s and your Notice of Assessment.

Storing them in IDBANKQR.COM

  1. Log in and open Add New ID.
  2. Set Country to Canada (usually filled in from your location).
  3. Pick from the Canada document list — Permanent Resident (PR) Card, Social Insurance Number (SIN) Letter, Work Permit, Study Permit, Provincial Health Card, T4 Slip and more.
  4. Add the Expiry Date — you'll get reminders 30, 7 and 1 day before.

Step 2: Protect yourself against SIN misuse

  • Check your credit reports from Equifax Canada and TransUnion Canada regularly — both offer free access.
  • Check your CRA My Account for tax slips from employers you don't recognise.
  • If you suspect misuse, contact Service Canada and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

Step 3: Share copies the safe way

When an employer or school needs a copy, share it with a QR code that expires and View only access instead of an email attachment.

Quick checklist

  • Keep your SIN confirmation letter at home, and share your SIN only when required.
  • Track PR card and permit expiry dates, and apply on time.
  • Keep encrypted copies of your status documents and tax slips.
  • Check your credit reports and CRA account regularly.
