How to Store Aadhaar Card Digitally

A step-by-step guide to keeping a secure digital copy of your Aadhaar card — downloading e-Aadhaar, using masked Aadhaar, and storing it safely so it's always on hand.

Your Aadhaar card is asked for almost everywhere — opening a bank account, getting a SIM card, booking a rental, applying for a scholarship or a government scheme. Keeping a reliable digital copy means you're never scrambling for the physical card or a photocopy. This guide covers the official ways to get a digital Aadhaar, and how to store it so it's both easy to reach and hard for anyone else to misuse.

Step 1: Get an official digital copy (e-Aadhaar)

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) lets you download an electronic copy of your Aadhaar, called e-Aadhaar, which UIDAI states is as valid as the physical card. To download it:

  1. Visit the official myAadhaar portal (myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in) and choose Download Aadhaar.
  2. Enter your Aadhaar number (or Enrolment ID) and verify with the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
  3. Choose whether you want a regular or masked Aadhaar (more on that below), then download the PDF.

The PDF is password-protected. The password is the first four letters of your name in capitals, followed by your year of birth — for example, RAVI1998.

Only use official sources. Download e-Aadhaar only from UIDAI's own website or the mAadhaar app. Websites or agents offering to "download your Aadhaar" for you are unnecessary and a common way personal data gets harvested.

Step 2: Consider a masked Aadhaar

A masked Aadhaar hides the first eight digits of your Aadhaar number and shows only the last four. For most everyday uses — hotel check-ins, rental paperwork, many KYC forms that just need proof of identity — a masked copy is enough, and it greatly reduces what someone could do with a copy you've handed over. Keep both versions: the full one for situations that genuinely require your complete number, and the masked one for everything else.

Step 3: Or scan your physical card properly

If you'd rather store a photo of your actual card:

  • Place the card on a plain, dark surface in good, even light — no flash glare.
  • Capture both the front and the back (the back has your address).
  • Make sure every digit and the QR code on the card are sharp and fully in frame.
  • Combine both sides into a single PDF so they always stay together.

Step 4: Store it somewhere secure — not just your phone gallery

A photo of your Aadhaar sitting in your gallery or a WhatsApp chat is easy to find, but it's also mixed in with everyday photos, synced to whatever cloud backup you use, and readable by any app with gallery access. (We compare the options in detail in Digital Document Storage vs Keeping Documents in Your Phone.) A dedicated, login-protected document store is a safer home for it.

Storing Aadhaar in IDBANKQR.COM

  1. Log in and open Add New ID.
  2. Choose Aadhaar Card as the document name and Government ID as the type.
  3. Upload your e-Aadhaar PDF or a photo (JPG, PNG or PDF, up to 2 MB), tap Take Photo, or use Scan Document to capture the front and back into one PDF.
  4. When you use a photo, an AI-assisted scan tries to fill in your Aadhaar number automatically — always double-check it before saving.

Your file is encrypted at rest, every request for it is checked against your account, and signing in requires your password, plus a one-time code sent to your email when you turn on Extended Authentication Security.

About the password-protected PDF: if you store the e-Aadhaar PDF as downloaded, you (and anyone you share it with) will need the PDF password to open it. That's an extra layer of protection — but if you want a copy that opens instantly, store a scan of the card instead, or keep both.

Step 5: Share it carefully when someone asks

When a bank, landlord or office needs your Aadhaar, avoid emailing or WhatsApp-ing the file — those copies live on forever in their inbox and can be forwarded. Instead, share a time-limited QR code that shows only that one document and stops working automatically. Share the masked version whenever the full number isn't required.

Extra protection: lock your Aadhaar biometrics

UIDAI lets you lock your Aadhaar biometrics through the myAadhaar portal or the mAadhaar app, so your fingerprints and iris can't be used for authentication until you unlock them. It's a simple, free step that adds protection no matter where your card copies end up.

Quick checklist

  • Download e-Aadhaar only from UIDAI's official portal or app.
  • Keep a masked copy for everyday sharing.
  • Store both sides together, somewhere login-protected and encrypted.
  • Share with a time-limited link or QR code rather than a permanent attachment.
  • Keep your physical card safe — a digital copy complements it, it doesn't replace it.
